Ericsson's 2019 Mobility Report is very optimistic about 5G. A look at the forecasts with the hype cycle in mind.
“As market after market switches on 5G, we are at a truly momentous point in time. No previous generation of mobile technology has had the potential to drive economic growth to the extent that 5G promises. It goes beyond connecting people to fully realizing the Internet of Things (IoT) and the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” That is the opening paragraph of the June 2019 Ericsson Mobility Report.
Almost every significant technology advance now goes through what Gartner calls the hype cycle. We have come to expect new technologies to be met with optimism and big promises, at least until reality sets in and things do not work out exactly as expected.
Even with that in mind, Ericsson's embrace of 5G in the report is notable. The optimism is backed by a lot of numbers, although they can be hard to pick out of a 36-page document.
